  2. The Ford AOD-E and 4R70W Transmissions. First introduced in 1992 for modular 4.6 liter engines in the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, and Town Car models, these transmissions are excellent choices for street performance with small block engines. By 1994, these units had completely replaced the older AOD. They're readily available on the used market.

AOD Transmissions

AOD Pros:

AODE / 4R70W Transmission. Representative image (s) may not reflect actual part number selected. Application Chart. Close cousin to the AOD, the AODE /4R70W is an electronically. Controlled overdrive, first seen in 1992. AODE transmission planetary gears were the same ratios, the first thing to happen was interchange of parts which is okay to do, except for the internal ring gear. The internal ring gear for the AODE transmission must have the holes in the ring gear, to trigger the output shaft speed sensor, as shown in Figure 8. The AODE is a strong and sturdy 4 speed automatic transmission started by Ford in 1991 for use in F150 and F250 Super Duty pickup trucks. Years later AODE was used in the Lincoln Town Car and Mercury Grand Marquis. In 1993 and 1994 Ford also added this transmission to.

    • Now the cheapest way into an automatic overdrive for your Ford. It can be built to handle almost anything.
    • Lost of choices for mounting in Mustang.
    • It can be updated with AODE parts.
Problems

AOD Cons:

    • TV cable setup can be an issue.
    • Done wrong it will lunch the transmission. Mounting to other Ford chassis will be less easy, but many ran the FMX which is a cousin to the AOD.
    • Lower numerical gearing than the stock C4 or C6. The car will be a bit more sluggish off the line.
    • The thin valve body is more likely to warp.
    • Weak input shaft (stock)

Torque Limit: 450hp (average) Can be built to handle 600Plus HP.

Transmission

Parasitic Draw: 45 hp estimate. We’ve seen numbers as high as 55-60 (same as the Ford C6) (C4 is our base at 28 hp).

Gearing:

1st: 2.40:1
2nd 1.47:1
3rd: 1.00:1
OD .67:1

AODE Transmissions

AODE Pros:

    • Stronger than the original AOD larger overdrive band and overdrive servo.
    • Stronger input shaft.
    • Electronic controls for easier setup.
    • Lock-up converter: You can unlock the converter for acceleration or unlock it for efficiency.

AODE Cons:

    • Costs are higher due to electronic controls and better components.
    • Lower numeric ratios than your original C4/C6 equals less acceleration if a stock axle is maintained.

4R70W/AOD-EW Transmissions

4R70W/AOD-EW Pros:

    • Top of the line Overdrive Transmission.
    • Ratios more resemble those from the C6 and C4 allowing you to run your stock ration with no loss of acceleration on takeoff.
    • Lots of choices for controlling the transmission via aftermarket shift controllers like the ones from US shift.

4R70W/AOD-EW Cons:

    • Costs are higher due to electronic controls and better components.

Torque Limit: 506 hp (average) Can be built to handle more.

Parasitic Draw: 45 hp estimate. We’ve seen numbers as high as 55-60 (same as the Ford C6)

Also of Interest:

  1. Slide under the vehicle to view the transmission pan. The transmission is under the center of the vehicle, immediately behind the engine.
  2. Look for the electronic cable and electrical plug. AODE and 4R70W transmissions have a plug on the driver's-side rear of the transmission housing.

How to Identify Ford Transmissions

  1. Take a picture of the transmission.
  2. Measure the distance from the bellhousing to the rear of the transmission.
  3. Look at the transmission pan and note the shape and the number of bolts.
  4. Find the year of the vehicle the transmission came from.
  5. Find the model of the vehicle the transmission came from.

Also, is the Ford AOD transmission any good? The Ford AOD transmission was evident in cars like the Mustangs, Fairmont, and LTDs around 1980 and 1993, and it was quite unique even though not in a really good way. For starters, it uprooted the Second gear in the shift pattern which left the latter dwindling in the gory land without remarkable performance.

Accordingly, are all Ford AOD transmissions the same?

The AODE and 4R70W transmissions were an all-new AOD case designed for electronic interaction with engine controls. The AODE and 4R70W are essentially the same AOD-based transmission. This is a 1997 4R70W with a speedometer drive and output shaft speed sensor. Visible here is the manual shift lever for a column shift.

What years did Ford use the AOD transmission?

Aode Transmission For Sale

The AOD (for automatic overdrive) is a four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive. Introduced in 1980, it was Ford's first four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. The gearset design is based on the Ford 'X' automatic transmissions used during the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
