Thanks to the efforts of Simone Karin (gimp.lisanet.de) all Mac OS X users now have the chance to download and use GIMP 2.8.
Download The GIMP Portable. It is a free application for photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. It can be used as a simple paint program, an expert quality photo retouching program, an online batch processing system, a mass production image render, an image format converter etc. The download links above will attempt to download GIMP from one of our trusted mirror servers. Supported OS: macOS 10.9 Mavericks or over Since the 2.8.2 version, GIMP runs on OSX natively. No X11 environment is required.

As you can read in her GIMP 2.8.0 for Mac announcement, she has built some other very useful plugins for GIMP 2.8 too and put them into the package (i.e. wavelet denoise, chromatic abberation, focus blur, UFRaw and more).
